JGP were awarded SME of the Year by Constructing Excellence South West (CESW) in 2022. The award was in recognition of JGP’s contribution of the region’s built environment and infrastructure. We were judged on our growth through engaging with and developing best practice, our investment in our employees and our use of digital technologies.

The CESW award enabled us to showcase some of our numerous engineering projects and inspections that we have been involved with over the past year, such as:

JGP hold ISO 9001 Quality Management System (QMS) accreditation and always strive for continual improvement in everything we do. The QMS process regularly reviews services to ensure best practice is embedded at all levels.  Our Mission Statement is “To provide our clients with sound and cost-effective consultancy to enable them to achieve their business goals through innovative solutions”.

We believe in sharing innovations and experiences and regularly participate in local Institution of Civil Engineer (ICE) and Geological Society events and host seminars. In the last 12 months, JGP have presented on coastal stability and mine workings in Cornwall.

The company has embraced the development and utilisation of open-source computer software to create robust efficient models and undertake complex analysis. We have recently worked alongside the University of Plymouth (UoP) developing an open-source statistical function to create a soil sampling strategy for contaminated land compliant to BS 18400-104.  We are also in the early stages of a new collaborative project with Plymouth City Council, the UoP and their students in the production of a 3D geological model of Plymouth to assist with the locations of potential ground source heat extraction points; JGP will be mentoring and reviewing the outputs during the project.

The use of digital technologies is highly advantageous for clients. We have embraced the increasingly large variety of open-source datasets and software, combining the two to develop faster more efficient use of the available (free) data. JGP use these datasets to provide an insight of the local environment relative to the area of the projects we are involved in.  This helps us at initial stages of a project to target key areas and limitations of the site before carrying out investigations.  JGP have also designed and implemented notebook technologies as a user interface to access and process available datasets. The notebook technologies are a kind of digital notebook that have a mix of standard English text and blocks of computer code that are run to carry out the required process. The notebooks are completely open allowing the user to change the input for processing, provide an easy-to-understand visual representation of the analysed data and of course numerical values when required. JGP also use the notebooks to analyse/process project related data.

Whilst 2022 gave the company the opportunity to reflect on how far we have come over the past 35 years; we are also looking forward to writing the next chapter of our company. We are taking the opportunity to grow, improve our sustainability and reduce our environmental impact.
