Lundy Island, Access Road - Civil Engineering

John Grimes Partnership designed a piled anchored reinforced sprayed concrete solution formed over sections of the existing deteriorating walls and road. It is designed to resist down-slope forces and withstand predicted shallowly rooted landslip impact without sustaining more than readily repairable damage.

During a storm in March 2008 the sea lock gates to this Scheduled Ancient Monument were badly damaged. Horizontal wave forces broke the chains and props on the canal gate lifting the 12 tonne south gate clear of the bottom hinge and dislodging some large granite blocks at the top of the wall.

John Grimes Partnership directed a final phase of ground investigation, assessed ground conditions in accordance with Eurocode 7 and prepared an AIP for pile design. JGP designed the piled underpinning of the bridge piers, with piles being designed to have the structural capacity to support the bridge through a 2m deep scour that might have undermined a bridge pier foundation.

A new fish pass was required to enable migratory fish to reach spawning grounds in the upper reaches of the River Neet above the weir. The precast concrete channel installed along the side of the weir contained an aluminium baffle system, which created turbulence, slowing the water flow and increasing its depth, allowing fish to swim up it.
