Structural Engineer Position

John Grimes Partnership is a multidisciplinary engineering consultant specialising in Geotechnical, Civil and Structural engineering.  Our office is located in the South Devon town of Ivybridge on the edge of Dartmoor some 15 minutes from Plymouth and 30 minutes from Exeter.

We are typically involved in a wide variety of engineering projects covering general domestic, luxury high spec homes, commercial, educational, healthcare building structures, simple traditional through to complex foundations and geo-structural interaction, retention structures, coastal defence and marine structures contamination, drainage and flood risk to name but a few.

We currently looking to employ a structural engineer with a minimum of 5 years’ experience in the field of building structures.  The successful applicant will have experience of investigations, assessment, design and detailing building structures from small scale domestic/residential through to large scale commercial / industrial / educational buildings.

You will hold a degree in Civil or Structural Engineer, be a confident, enthusiastic, highly motivated individual with good communication skills, hold a full driving license, be chartered or near chartered and have an excellent understanding of building structures.

You will have sound experience and a good knowledge of the design of all common building forms i.e. timber, steel, masonry and concrete using Eurocodes. You will be proficient in the use of design/detailing software such as AutoCAD, SCIA, Masterseries etc.

You will be responsible for producing detailed fee quotations, undertaking site visits and condition surveys, providing guidance to graduate engineers, controlling and recording your own time whilst managing and completing your own projects.

Graduate Structural Engineer

Position:

We are seeking a full-time Graduate Structural Engineer to join our award-winning Engineering Consultancy based in Ivybridge, Devon, to work on exciting and challenging Structural Engineering projects across the southwest region and beyond.

 

The Role:

Candidates will be responsible for undertaking a range of structural engineering design and related works including the following.

  • Delivering structural design and detailing of projects under the guidance of the project engineer.
  • Working with our Civil and Geotechnical departments to help deliver cross departmental projects.
  • Travelling to and attending sites including domestic properties for the purposes of survey works, inspections, monitoring works, meetings, etc.
  • Working with industry partners/teams including Architects, Contractors, Local Authorities and Engineers to deliver projects to suit client requirements.
  • Assisting with the compilation of fee estimates / tender documents for the procurement of new work.

 

Requirements:

  • Educated to degree level (MEng / BEng / BSc) in a Civil Engineering or associated degree subject.
  • Relevant experience in a structural design environment is favourable (new graduate will be considered).
  • An aptitude for using software such as AutoCad, Revit is essential with further training provided.
  • An understanding of the use of 3D design software packages such as Masterseries and SCIA Engineer would be useful although not essential.
  • Be conscientious with high standards, attention to detail and good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Be competent in the use of Microsoft Office suite.
  • Keep up with industry innovations, undertake CPD to maintain a good knowledge of current construction & engineering practice.
  • Be working towards chartered status, or if not already, keen to do so; and
  • Have a full, clean driving licence.

 

Beneficial but not essential:

  • Hold a current CSCS card.

Graduate Geo-Structural Engineer

Position:

We are seeking a full-time Graduate Geo-Structural Engineer to join our award-winning Engineering Consultancy based in Ivybridge, Devon, to work on exciting and challenging Geotechnical and Civil Engineering projects mainly within the southwest region.

 

The Role:

Candidates will be responsible for undertaking a range of geotechnical engineering design works including the following.

  • Working with senior team members to design a range of works including:
    • Excavation support systems
    • Earth retention systems
    • Foundations
    • Ground improvement schemes
    • Soil nails & rock anchors
    • Sheet piles, Secant piles
  • Providing support in the interpretation on ground investigations.
  • Preparing a wide range of technical reports including Desk Studies, Interpretative and Design reports.
  • Working with our civil and structural departments to help deliver cross departmental projects.
  • Travelling to and attending sites including domestic properties for the purposes of survey works, inspections, monitoring works, meetings, etc.
  • Working with industry partners/teams including Architects, Contractors, Local Authorities and Engineers to deliver projects to suit client requirements.
  • Assisting with the compilation of fee estimates / tender documents for the procurement of new work.

  • Knowledge of soil and rock mechanics, soil-structure interaction analysis and design, numerical analysis and the concepts of Limit State Design, and their application within Eurocodes.
  • Familiarity with risk management and preparation of risk registers.
  • Hold a current CSCS card.

Principal / Senior Geo-Structural Engineer

Position:

We are seeking a full-time Principal / Senior Geo-Structural Engineer to join our award-winning Engineering Consultancy based in Ivybridge, Devon, to work on exciting and challenging Geotechnical and Civil Engineering projects mainly within the southwest region.

 

The Role:

The successful applicant will be responsible for providing technical and professional leadership as well as assisting others in the delivery of a range of geotechnical engineering design works including the following:

  • Designing and detailing of works including:
    • Excavation support systems
    • Earth retention systems
    • Foundations
    • Ground improvement schemes
    • Soil nails & rock anchors
    • Sheet piles, Secant piles
    • Temporary works
  • Interpreting ground investigations, identifying ground risk and providing technical support on ground risk.
  • Preparing and checking a wide range of technical reports including Desk Studies, Interpretative and Design reports.
  • Preparing feasibility studies and other technical analysis for construction procedures.
  • Ensuring projects are designed to comply with current design codes and regulations.
  • Ensuring projects and site works comply with current H&S requirements and industry standards whilst promoting a culture of awareness.
  • Producing and assisting with the compilation of fee estimates / tender documents for the procurement of new work.
  • Working with our civil and structural departments to help deliver cross departmental projects.
  • Travelling to and attending sites including commercial and domestic properties for the purposes of survey works, inspections, monitoring works, meetings, etc.
  • Working with industry partners/teams including Architects, Contractors, Local Authorities and Engineers to deliver projects to suit client requirements.

 

Requirements:

  • Educated to degree level (MEng / BEng / BSc) in a Civil Engineering or Structural Engineering degree subject with geotechnical modules.
  • Have a minimum 3-5 years’ relevant post chartership experience in a geo-structural design environment. (Less experience may be considered for the right candidate).
  • Significant geotechnical design experience including writing Geotechnical Design Reports and Earth Works Specifications (to CD622 and EC7).
  • Proficiency in the use of design software such as AutoCad, Masterseries, SCIA Engineer, WALLAP, QGIS, Civils 3D is essential.
  • Be capable of working individually or as part of a wider team as lead engineer or assisting others.
  • Be conscientious with high standards, attention to detail and good written and oral communication skills.
  • Be competent in the use of Microsoft Office suite.
  • Keep up with industry innovations, undertake CPD to maintain a good knowledge of current construction & engineering practice.
  • Have a Full, clean driving licence.
